JAKARTA (Thomson Financial) - Indonesia's anti-graft watchdog grilled the governor of the central bank Wednesday over suspicions he was involved in misappropriating some 11 million dollars in bank funds.

Burhannudin Abdullah, and two other Bank Indonesia (BI) officials, have been accused by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of spending about a third of the amount to bribe lawmakers in 2004.

The remaining money was suspected of being used to hire lawyers to settle cases against BI brought in 2003-2004 over funds it handed out during the liquidity crunch of 1998.

"I came here to answer a summons from the KPK. I am someone who tries to be a law-abiding citizen," Abdullah told journalists as he arrived for questioning at the commission's headquarters.

Abdullah has repeatedly claimed he is innocent.

The KPK last month named Abdullah, BI legal affairs director Oey Hoeng Tiong and the former head of the BI communications bureau Rusli Simanjuntak, as suspects in the case. The latter two officials were detained last week.

Observers have said the case may be politically motivated, given that it emerged just a few months before parliament is set to appoint a new central bank governor.

Abdullah could have run for a second five-year term but he indicated last week that he would not seek re-appointment.
